Using size 8 circular needles,
holding two strands together of worsted weight yarn (*this pattern can also be done using one strand of worsted weight yarn),
CO 65 sts.
Pm and join in the round, being careful not to twist sts.
Work in Stockinette St (knit every round) until hat measures about 5 inches from CO edge.
(gauge :12 stitches and 18 rows = 4 inchesin stockinette stitch with yarn doubled)
Decreasing rows:
- K5, K2tog. Repeat until the end of row. (You’ll have a couple of stitches left over at the end of the decrease, just knit these.)
- K to the end
- K4, K2tog. Repeat until the end of row.
Continue working in stockinette until the piece is 8 inches long. You may have to switch to double pointed needles after the decrease rows. (I did not use dpns, I just pulled the cable out, and kept going)
Finishing:
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Divide sts in half and kitchener stitch the top of the hat closed. Weave in ends.
*Comment from fellow marcher lindyvw: Many thanks to Renee for posting her version of the Pink Hat. So many great patterns out there and am heartened by the response to the project. Renee, your quick and easy pattern was the most efficient for me and I was able to knock out a few in record time. The yarn - swung through Michaels on the way to the airport and though I love a luxurious yarn, this round is all about accessibility. I scooped up Vanna’s Choice @2 for $6. Made first hat as suggested in doubled yarn. With my tension, it could have marched on its own. Switched to single thickness on 8/16’s and was still substantial enough for a cold day. At $1.50/hat, we’ll care for a few more marchers. I’ll be under one of them. Many thanks, Renee and the Ravelry community!
Thank you from rural Montana! I'll get the yarn today. A friend asked me to knit her a Pussy Hat for the march in Helena, MT, on the 21st, and I'm happy to oblige. Also, greetings to WVA. My husband is from New Martinsville. :)
